New Zealand’s 3G switch-off: you might be fine despite the warning messages

I had been concerned that I was getting messages from One NZ (formerly Vodafone) telling me to change my phone because 3G was being killed off.

The Australian 3G switch-off made things more concerning, since there are Aussies with virtually new phones being cut off, and the one thing they have in common is that they didn’t buy their phones through one of their telcos.

Not only is this highly suspect, it’s probably illegal, even under their Trade Practices Act 1974.

Fortunately, the situation here in Aotearoa is not sinister.

According to a One rep today at their Lambton Quay store, they are being extra-cautious and ‘pinging’ (his word) all phones they do not recognize. He says that even Oppo phones sold by One NZ have received those messages, even though he knows full well they are compatible. So if you’ve bought your phone and it’s not bog standard (Samsung or Iphone!), odds are you will receive those messages from One NZ.

In and out in less than two minutes—it took me longer to write this blog post. Hopefully this will help others who are puzzled by the messages.

I don’t know about phones that drop to 3G for emergency calls though, as I have read of these cases. So please check if your phone might be affected on this front.
