How the search engines fared with a new site

As Autocade World is a relatively new site, it has been interesting to see how some of the search engines have fared. It is a Wordpress site, which experience tells me presents a set of issues when it comes to search.

Mojeek: barely anything. Four links to date, though an interesting mix of the home page and three articles. The articles were all linked from other sites.

Bing: absolutely nothing at the time of writing, though a test yesterday showed a reasonably comprehensive mixture of tag pages and articles. Had I written this post yesterday, I would have concluded Bing had the best mixture of results. Looks like it’s back to 2022 for Bing with, at least tonight, a collapsed index. Duck Duck Go, as a Bing reskin, reports zero as well.

Google: a claimed 170 results but the top ones are the home page, and tag and sectional index pages. You have to get to result no. 31 before you see an article. It only showed 50 results in total.

Yandex: a very good mix of articles and tag pages. It doesn’t give a total count but I managed to get 100 results out of it.

Baidu: only the home page. The same with Brave. Yep: nothing.

GMX was not tested as I can no longer get this site to work:

I had had issues with it before and managed to get it going, but it’s already been a few minutes as I type this. Frankly, if you need to take special steps just to view a website, then it obviously isn’t well developed. Another website that was fine before and “improvements” have wrecked it.

Of these, it looks like Yandex has been the best at spidering a new site, and ranking its pages more logically. This is what we saw with a new site our firm worked on in 2023. Google continues to have problems with ranking, though this time I couldn’t see a pattern (of the number of words in the title, where the shorter the title, the higher up it appeared for a Wordpress site) as I did earlier. Earlier experience was also that Baidu would rank tag and category pages highly at the expense of actual content, but so far I can’t tell since it only has the home page.

If you are introducing a new site, it’ll pay to have the above in mind, with the knowledge that no search engine is perfect.
