Carry on designing

Journeys through time are fascinating. Earlier this week, I looked at some of the websites we liked from the Jack Yan & Associates links’ section. In many cases, it was a trip down memory lane, as some sites still had their 2000s layouts. Sadly, this could mean that a few of them will disappear in time, if past experience is any indication.

This was also fascinating: a 14-year journey, from 1961 to 1975, of Carry on posters, referred on Mastodon by Jason Lefkowitz. The first is still ’50s in flavour, and would have been considered dated when new. Huge changes followed, with a more modernist influence in the ’60s (although Carry on Cruising’s poster is still done with hand-drawn litho), and there is outright sexism by the turn of the decade. The final one is very ’70s in execution, colourful and bland compared to some of its forebears.

Of course you can chart design trends and culture through Carry on, though back in the day it was probably inappropriate to use the series as any sort of historical marker.
